Art Unlimited organized the exhibitions of the Valongo Festival Internacional da Imagem [Valongo International Image Festival], held at the Port of Santos, from October 4 through 8, 2017, curated by Horácio Fernandez and Iatã Cannabrava.
Bruno de Moraes and Cristina de Middel – Excessocenus. In reference to the excesses of every sort that we experience nowadays, a look at ourselves, as an unconscious humanity with no concern for tomorrow. The photographer duo proposes a hybrid, in which the thin lines between fiction and so-called reality are erased.
Patricia Andrade –Não tenho medo de nada porque não tenho nada[I’m Not Afraid of Anything Because I Have Nothing] |Minha vida irá mudar [My Life Will Change]. The artist makes a portrait of indignation in the public and private spheres in two series, Minha vida irá mudar and Não tenho medo porque não tenho nada. Patricia photographed her private life surrounded by public life during two years of the total crisis in Portugal. The Arches of Valongo were taken over by her images that are like stones thrown at power. A shout of “enough already”!
Antonio Julio Duarte –Mercurio [Mercury], White Noise and O Candidato [The Candidate]. The artist brings us to look at luxury and waste; a depiction of the Chinese wealth with its sex palaces, games, success and the money of the large cities. They are ultra-brilliant images of the face of power, a false, deceptive luxury found in exclusive and always unoccupied spaces. In the third series, O Candidato, these spaces also appear, but occupied by their users. They are images of an apparently democratic election, where he reveals the fragility of the local politics.
